When I first met my husband it didn’t take him long to sum me up. We were both in our Grad year at Mackay Base Hospital & living in the hospital living quarters. I was doing my usual thing & complaining about the cleanliness of the place – the result of having cleaning staff that were addicted to daytime TV. He turned to me & he said “you’re a sad sap aren’t you” & I replied “what?” – “you’re a morbid soul, one of those people who listen to REM & like poetry”.
I was pretty religious when I met my husband, & I remember saying to him piously that “God had placed me in his path so I could instruct him ‘in the ways of the Lord’ – I’m pretty sure I didn’t say it quite like that but it’s what I meant. He was raised a Buddhist & turned to me & replied ‘maybe he placed ME in YOUR path’? We laughed.
I’ll never forget the first time my husband & I went out alone together. We went to grab a bite to eat at & he was acting all nervous & shy. He looked over at me & asked “where can I find myself a nice young boy?” – He meant GIRL! I still stir him about it (Fruedian slip?), what a crack up.
My husband is a ray of light in my life; he often states that he doesn’t know what it’s like to be ‘sad’. He tries his best to empathise with me but finds it difficult at times, he’s always there though & that’s the most important thing. Words are often overrated.
