My father shares my love of birds, but unlike me he gets enjoyment from keeping them within the confines of a cage. When I was a child I once deliberately left the door to the Aviary open. Most of the birds didn’t even move; others left only to come back later that same day. Only one didn't return. I never understood this – why did they not cease this opportunity? Why did they not want what they were destined for? What they were meant to be? Why didn’t they want to fly? In hindsight I now understand – we’re not so different from the birds in the Aviary, caged with fear by the idea of change & of reaching our full potential. But every now & then one of us dares to try & risks everything…& all we can do is look on in awe & wonder.
