She only said, "The day is dreary,
He cometh not," she said;
She said, "I am aweary, aweary,
I would that I were dead!"
- TENNYSON from "Mariana"
I love this marriage of written & visual art - Millais was inspired by a number of Tennyson's poems, another being "The lady of Shalot". This poem & the painting are both so sad, I can't help but think of the games people play in love. I've never been one for these games...& I too have often been left stranded & waiting just like Mariana. Thank goodness that my dear husband's not one for these games either, it wastes so much time & energy & it's just plain cruel.
